Teeth Whitening for a Vibrant Smile
Many patients want whiter teeth that they can show off in a beaming smile. To help patients achieve a brilliant white smile, Dr. Ron L. Shiver offers both in-office and take-home teeth whitening options in our Valdosta, GA, dental office. The treatments we provide are stronger than over-the-counter products, so the results are more dramatic. In addition, as a cosmetic dentist, Dr. Shiver has the experience and advanced techniques to give you the brighter smile you desire.
In-office treatments are able to offer the most significant whitening effects in the shortest amount of time. You will be able to leave our office with a smile that is several shades lighter.
Over time, most teeth naturally become stained and discolored. There are two distinct types of tooth stains:
- Extrinsic stains: These stains are on the outside of the teeth, and are typically caused by the things we eat and drink every day. Tobacco use, coffee, tea, and red wine are the most well-known culprits when it comes to staining teeth. However, dark pigments and tannins in blueberries and greens stain teeth as well, and even dark-colored sodas can compromise the whiteness of enamel.
- Intrinsic stains: This discoloration occurs beneath tooth enamel, within a tooth. The typical causes of intrinsic stains are tetracycline antibiotics, fluorosis, and age. Trauma and metal restorations can also cause internal stains. Intrinsic stains are typically untreatable from the outside. In the case of fluorosis, which results in an uneven tooth color, topical whitening can lighten natural tooth enamel to blend more evenly with the white discoloration. However, the white areas do not go away.
Of these two types of discoloration, extrinsic staining is easier to treat, because it is superficial. We can usually lighten or remove extrinsic stains with an in-office or take-home teeth whitening treatments. Intrinsic stains are typically treated with bonding or veneers.
Dr. Shiver offers two forms of teeth-whitening to fit every patient's budget and treatment goals.
In-office treatments are able to offer the most significant whitening effects in the shortest amount of time. We will apply a specially formulated whitening solution to your teeth, ensuring that it does not come in contact with your gums and other soft tissue. After the whitening solution is applied, we will use a specialized light on your teeth to activate the active ingredients in the solution. These steps can be repeated, with the entire process lasting about an hour. You will be able to leave our office with a smile that is several shades lighter.
You also have the option of whitening your teeth at your own pace and from the comfort of your own home. Take-home kits also provide an effective way to maintain your in-office whitening results.
For this technique, we will take impressions of your teeth to create special trays that are part of your custom take-home kit. We will also provide a whitening gel, which you will apply to the insides of your trays. You will then wear your trays for as little as a half hour each day. You can expect to see maximum results in a couple of weeks.
