General Dentistry: Helping Patients of All Ages Achieve and Maintain Healthy Smiles

Professional Exams and Cleanings

Maintaining healthy teeth and gums requires diligent dental hygiene at home as well as regular oral care appointments at our practice. During your biannual visit, Dr. Ron Shiver will examine your teeth and gums for any signs of decay, gum disease, and other oral health issues. Next, one of our experienced hygienists will perform a thorough cleaning to remove plaque and tartar. If we find that you are at a high risk for decay, Dr. Shiver may recommend a fluoride treatment or sealants to provide your teeth with an added layer of protection.

Periodontal Treatments

Even if you have straight, healthy teeth, neglecting your periodontal (gum) care can eventually compromise the overall health of your smile. If Dr. Shiver diagnoses you with the early stages of gum disease, he can perform a deep cleaning to treat bacteria both above and below the gum line. In more advanced cases of gum disease or recession, we can use tissue grafts to help restore loss periodontal tissue. We use cadaver tissue grafts in order to minimize discomfort. Dr. Shiver can also perform cosmetic microsurgery to enhance the appearance of your gum tissue.

Root Canal Therapy

When oral bacteria penetrates into the inner chambers of a tooth, it can lead to uncomfortable symptoms and the need for extraction. With root canal therapy, Dr. Shiver will remove infected tissue, clean the interior of your tooth, and fill in the resulting space with a synthetic material. To ensure your comfort during root canal therapy, Dr. Shiver will draw upon his extensive experience and utilize advanced techniques. In addition, we have an in-office computerized tomography (CT) scanner that allows us to diagnose your condition and plan your procedure with optimal precision.

Extractions

Dr. Shiver will always do his best to salvage the health of a tooth, but in some cases, tooth extraction is the only way to preserve a patient's oral health. Dr. Shiver can extract a single damaged tooth, multiple teeth, or perform full mouth extractions in preparation for a denture. Additionally, Dr. Shiver also performs extractions on non-impacted wisdom teeth. After undergoing a tooth extraction, we can use a dental implants treatment or another restorative procedure to help renew the look and function of your smile.

Mouth Guards

To help protect your teeth from chips, fractures, and other damage, Dr. Shiver can provide you with a custom-made mouth guard. We frequently provide mouth guards for patients who take part in high-impact sports, such as football or hockey. If you suffer from bruxism (teeth grinding) or temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorder, mouth guards can often be used as a safe and effective treatment. When compared to store-bought mouth guards, professional mouth guards from our practice offer a more comfortable and secure fit, a greater level of protection, and increased durability.

Halitosis Treatment

Suffering from chronic bad breath can make patients feel self-conscious when interacting with others. If halitosis is interfering with your daily life, Dr. Shiver can examine your mouth, diagnose the potential cause of your condition, and recommend an appropriate treatment. In many cases, we can effectively treat halitosis with oral medications and rinses to eliminate bacteria and freshen your breath. If Dr. Shiver finds that post-nasal drip may be the cause of your halitosis, he can prescribe steroids to help relieve your symptoms.
