Benefits of Crowns

A dental crown is able to provide a number of restorative and cosmetic benefits to your smile. By rebuilding damaged or broken teeth, crowns can eliminate pain and discomfort. You will once again be able to enjoy full function when eating and speaking. In addition, these restorations can also provide vital strength and protection from decay, preserving your natural teeth after treatment for cavities and root canals. Crowns are also matched to the shape and color of your surrounding teeth, and can offer cosmetic enhancement if you have a tooth that is severely worn, stained, or irregularly shaped. With our durable, high-quality crowns you can achieve a consistent, virtually seamless smile.

The Crown Procedure

Placing a crown will usually require two separate visits. Prior to placing this restoration, your damaged tooth must be treated and shaped to provide a healthy, solid anchor. This stage will include procedures such as root canals and treatment for cavities. Your natural tooth will also be shaped to provide a more stable base for the crown, especially if the tooth is broken or cracked. Once your tooth is prepared, we will make a mold of your bite and send it to our partner lab to create your custom-crafted crown from porcelain, porcelain fused to metal, or zirconia. At this time, Dr. Shiver will provide you with a temporary crown. It usually takes about two weeks for your customized crown to be completed, at which time, you will return to our office for your second appointment. The restoration will be placed, and tested for a proper fit. After any necessary adjustments are made to ensure correct alignment and bite, we will cement your crown in place.

If chipped, damaged, or decayed teeth are limiting your quality of life, Dr. Shiver can provide you with durable, natural-looking crowns.

Restoring Dental Implants

If your teeth have suffered from severe decay or are badly broken below the gum line, extraction may be the only solution. For optimal oral health, we highly recommend that patients receive dental implants for missing teeth. These small, titanium posts will replace your tooth roots, maintaining jawbone health, and providing the unparalleled support for restorations. With a dental implant, you can receive a custom, high-quality crown that will not require any alteration of existing teeth for support.

Caring for Crowns

Advances in technology have made crowns a durable option to restore damaged teeth. However, you should still avoid chewing very sticky food that can pull on the crown, or very hard foods, which can chip the restoration. In some cases, your crown can be pulled too much and need to be cemented again. If chipped or damaged beyond repair, you may require a new restoration. It is also necessary to regularly brush and floss around crowns to prevent buildups of bacteria, plaque, and tartar that can damage the gums and surrounding teeth.
