Out Quality Dentures Can Restore Both Oral Health and Function

Tooth loss can limit your quality of life, limiting your ability eat and your confidence in your smile. Patients who have suffered from widespread tooth loss can benefit from dentures. These dental prosthetics not only restore the appearance of a smile but improve dental function, or your ability to eat and speak properly.  Dr. Ron L. Shiver provides high-quality, lifelike dentures at his Valdosta, GA, practice to help patients restore their smiles.Smiling woman looking at teeth in dental mirror

Types of Dentures

A full denture consists of an acrylic base that is matched to gum tissue and porcelain teeth that will blend with your smile. Patients may wear a full denture to replace their entire upper arch, lower arch, or both. Today, you have a choice of how you would like your dentures retained. Traditional dentures are held in place with suction or adhesive for the top arch, and adhesive alone for the bottom arch. However, innovative dental implants offer a reliable removable or fixed option for denture retention.

For patients who only need a few teeth replaced on an arch, Dr. Shiver may recommend a partial denture. Sometimes referred to as a dental bridge, partials are generally made on an acrylic or metal base, and are held in place with clasps that attach to natural teeth. A partial may also be supported by dental implants for superior stability.

Creating Your Custom Restorations

To begin the denture creation process, we will need to determine whether you want traditionally retained or implant-supported dentures. Dr. Shiver will then perform any necessary extractions, and our team will take an impression of your teeth or gums

For traditional dentures, your x-rays and impressions, along with Dr. Shiver’s blueprints dictating the color, size, and appearance of your new teeth, will be sent to our partner lab. There, a highly experienced lab technician will fabricate dentures that will fit well and look natural in your smile. Once your prosthesis is ready, Dr. Shiver will examine how it rests along your gums and make any necessary changes to ensure a good fit, proper bite, and comfortable function.

Dentures are able to significantly improve quality of life for patients who are missing teeth.

If you chose to receive implant-supported dentures, you will undergo an oral surgery for placement of the small, titanium posts to your jaw. For approximately three to six months, you will wear a temporary denture while your jaw heals. Once the implants have fused with your jaw, Dr. Shiver can replace the temporary denture with your permanent prosthetic.

Benefits of Dentures

Dentures are able to significantly improve quality of life for patients who are missing teeth. These prostheses restore your oral function, enabling you to once again speak clearly enjoy a more varied diet. In addition, dentures restore the form of your smile. You will be able to smile with confidence in your full dental arch and properly maintained facial features.

Implant-supported dentures are able to offer further, life-changing benefits. Dental implants fuse with your jaw, becoming permanently fixed to provide unparalleled support to restorations. You will be able to eat, speak, and smile, knowing that your restoration will not slip. Because the implants replace lost tooth roots, they send regenerative signals to your jawbone, preventing bone loss and preserving the shape of your jaw. Dental implants are also incredibly durable. With proper oral hygiene and routine dental appointments, your implant posts can last for the rest of your life.
