Many patients experience anxiety when it comes to visiting the dentist and others may be unable to sit comfortably for long periods of time. To help patients relax and sit without discomfort during their procedure, Dr. Shiver offers sedation dentistry in our Valdosta, GA, dental office. Our practice is decided to providing gentle, compassionate care for all patients. Sedation can be used for everything from cleanings to extractions and other restorative procedures. We understand your anxiety and discomfort and do everything we can to ensure you receive vital care with as little stress as possible.
Dental sedation is a safe and gentle procedure that uses medication to help a patient feel calm, relaxed, and comfortable during treatment. It can be used for everything from a simple dental cleaning to root canal therapy. Dr. Shiver offers light sedation with nitrous oxide, stronger oral sedatives, and a combination of the two.
Good candidates for sedation can experience a variety of symptoms, including:
If appropriate for you, sedation dentistry can help you relax mentally and physically during your dental treatment. Depending on the type of sedation administered, you may have little to no recollection of your procedure.
We pay close attention to our patients under sedation, and will monitor your for your safety and comfort.
Dr. Shiver offers both nitrous oxide and oral conscious sedation. For patients who suffer from more severe anxiety, we can combine the two forms for more significant effects. We pay close attention to our patients under sedation, and will monitor you for your safety and comfort.
Nitrous oxide, or laughing gas, has been widely available to dental patients for over 100 years. This colorless and odorless gas can help you feel deeply relaxed, and some patients often experience feelings of euphoria. We administer the gas through a specialized mask and will work with you to ensure you receive the correct concentration. While nitrous oxide does not act as an anesthetic, it can remove fear and anxiety, which often lead to patients feeling more discomfort. The gas quickly takes effect, and also wears off quickly. There are no lasting effects of using nitrous oxide, and you should be able to drive yourself home and resume normal daily activities immediately after treatment.
For people who are unable to use nitrous oxide or require deeper sedative effects, Dr. Shiver offers oral conscious sedation. He will prescribe anti-anxiety medication, which you will typically take at home before you come to our office and again right before treatment. You will often enter a twilight sleep, during which you are fully conscious and responsive, but are also deeply relaxed and unlikely to remember any of your procedure. The effects of the prescription medication will linger, so you will need a ride home after treatment.
Some patients have put off dental care because of anxiety. Please contact us today to schedule an initial exam and consultation. You can discuss with Dr. Shiver if oral sedation is right for you.
