Nitrous Oxide Sedation: Mild Sedation with No Lasting Effects

If you have trouble sitting still in a dentist's chair or suffer from dental phobia, you may benefit from nitrous oxide sedation at Dr. Ron Shiver's practice in Valdosta, GA. The mild sedative has no lingering side effects and has been safely used on millions of patients. Dr. Shiver has more than 35 years of experience administering nitrous oxide so his patients can feel relaxed and comfortable throughout their treatment.

What Is Nitrous Oxide?

Also known as laughing gas, this mixture of oxygen and nitrous oxide (N2O) is administered through your nose. The steady stream of gas quickly enters a patient’s bloodstream through the lungs before acting on the central nervous system and brain. Nitrous oxide causes patients to feel:

  • Giddy
  • Euphoric
  • Relaxed
  • Peaceful
  • Mild tingling in their extremities

From the moment the gas is administered at our Valdosta clinic and throughout your procedure, Dr. Shiver will closely monitor its makeup. We will also monitor your behavior and other vital signs to ensure that you are consistently given a safe dosage of the sedative agent.

Am I a Candidate?

Nearly any patient who suffers from dental phobia (a fear of dental procedures) is an ideal candidate for sedation. Dr. Shiver will also determine if you have any medical conditions that may complicate the use of nitrous oxide sedation. Good candidates for this sedation option often have:
  • A low threshold for pain
  • An inability to control fidgeting while seated in an exam chair
  • Multiple cosmetic procedures or restorative treatments that need to be completed
  • Sensitive teeth
  • Past dental experiences that caused trauma
  • Restless leg syndrome

Restrictions & Alternative Options

Individuals who may not be a good candidate for nitrous oxide include:

  • Patients who are pregnant
  • Individuals who are chronically congested
  • Individuals who have a respiratory infection

Patients who are not good candidates may still benefit from oral conscious sedation, and some procedures simply require sedative effects that go beyond what nitrous oxide can provide.

This anti-anxiety medication can simply be taken before you visit our office. Oral conscious sedation often sends patients into a twilight sleep where they are conscious but deeply relaxed. The effects of the prescription medication linger, meaning you will need to plan ahead for a ride home after treatment.

Benefits of Nitrous Oxide

Many people enjoy the fact that the effects of nitrous oxide wear off quickly, allowing patients to drive themselves home after their procedure. Nitrous oxide also comes with a very low risk of complications or side effects. A small number of individuals experience nausea from nitrous oxide. If you have experienced negative side effects after using nitrous oxide in the past, please let Dr. Shiver or one of our staff members know.

This mild sedative has no lingering side effects so most patients can safely drive themselves home after treatment.

Other benefits of nitrous oxide include:

  • A long and safe track record
  • Minimal to zero side effects
  • No need for injections
  • A pleasant dental procedure experience
  • Relief from dental phobia
